Process of Court Marriage in Nepal

What is the process of marriage certification?

In Nepal, Marriage can be registered in three ways:

1. Through Court.

This marriage can be registered directly through the court, following all the procedures and requirements in the court itself. 

2. Through Ward

When marriage is done through local traditions and customs. This is generally the way to register marriage where the local ward office provides the marriage registration certificate. 


Eligibility for Marriage Registration

1. Both males and females should not be married at the time of registration.
2. Both males and females should be the age of 20 at the time of registration. 
3. Both males and females should accept each other as husband and wife. 

Document required for marriage registration

1. Application of marriage registration - one copy (original)
2. Citizenship of both man and woman - photocopy 1 copy each 
3. Passport size photo of both man and woman - 4 pcs
4.  Letter of recommendation from respective ward offices of male and female stating that both individuals are either unmarried or divorced. 

Process of registration

1. Firstly, the eligibility criteria must be fulfilled by the applicants i.e. they should be of the right age, should be unmarried and accept each other as husband and wife. If the applicants fail to meet the criteria, their application will be rejected. 
2. Then, the applicants should submit their application of marriage registration to the local ward office or marriage registration officer to initiate the process. 
3. After that, the local ward office or marriage registration officer will check your residence to verify the place of your residence. 
4. Next, you are required to submit all the documents mentioned above. These documents are then sent to the district court. 
5. Then the concerned authority will decide whether the marriage is valid or not within one week of submission of the application and supporting document. At the time of marriage, three witness along with the marriage registration officer should sign the deed of declaration. 
6. After a week or so of the submission of application, supporting document and other mentioned procedures, a marriage certificate will be issued to the couple.
